Good content is clear, engaging, and packed with information. However, the quality of the article itself won’t matter if nobody actually gets to see it. That’s where search engine optimization or SEO comes in, and it always has to work together with the content to maximize its efficiency.

The Key is Keywords

Inserting keywords in your content is fundamental SEO. Of course, you first have to know what keywords your target audience is using when they’re searching online. There are tools that can help you choose the right ones such as Google AdWords. Don’t bother using broad one or two word keywords as those are highly competitive.

As a rule, keep the keyword density to 3% to 5% of the overall word count, and spread them throughout the body instead of cluttering one paragraph with them. This keeps your content from being seen as spam by search engines and it won’t sound stilted to human readers. It is also better to have a keyword or two at the beginning of the article for search engines to pick up quickly.

The body isn’t the only place you should be placing keywords in. Add the keywords to the title as well as the HTML tags like image captions, alt text, and metadescription.

Links are Your Friends

Search engines take into account the links embedded in your content. Link to other websites you think is relevant to what you’re saying in your article. Give credit where it’s due when you’re citing important information. Don’t forget to link to the other pages in your own website if you can, as this doesn’t just provide extra info but it also optimizes your entire website for search engine “spiders”.

Consistency is Crucial

It’s not just enough to write good content. You have to be able to churn out good content on a regular basis. Create a publishing calendar that you can commit to and commit. This helps you out with both your readers as well as search engines. You can gain a bigger following when you’re constantly posting fresh content on a reliable schedule. The more content you create about certain topics, search engines will start recognizing you more and more as an authority which will increase your ranking.

Use Tools

There are plenty of tools you can use for free that can help you in a variety of ways. Use Google Analytics to know your website’s strengths and weaknesses, which you can then use to track how well your content has been optimized. Free blogging websites offer a bevy of plug-ins that warns you about duplicate content, automates hyperlinking, installs metadata, and so much more. Make it easy for your readers to share your content with social media buttons.

Know your keywords and place them strategically along with your links, and keep putting out fresh content. With the aid of the many tools available online, you won’t ever have to worry about your content getting buried in the back pages of search engines.
